Abstract:Abstract:[Objective]Basalt is a widely distributed extrusive rock in nature with substantial reserves. Basalt ore that meets industrial standards and possesses economic mining value is widely applied across various industrial sectors due to its unique natural properties and excellent performance. China has abundant and widely distributed basalt mineral resources. Summarizing the distribution characteristics of basalt resources and the current status of industrial development and utilization in China is of great significance for the development of the basalt mining industry in the country.[Methods]This paper summarizes the research literature at home and abroad, combs the distribution characteristics of basalt deposits in China, and summarizes the basalt ore, deposit types, and industrial development and utilization status.[Results]The total estimated volume of basalt in China is approximately 2 trillion cubic meters. By the end of 2023, the cumulative extraction of basalt ore had reached 91.5 million tons and continues to increase annually. Based on differences in geochemical composition, basalt deposits can be classified into tholeiitic, calc-alkaline, and alkaline basalt types. In terms of ore types, basalt deposits are primarily used for five applications: construction, cast stone, rock wool production, decorative purposes, and as cement additives. Among these, construction-grade basalt ore and alkaline basalt deposits are the most common. In industrial development and utilization, basalt is predominantly employed in construction and building materials. Additionally, it has potential applications as a material for nuclear waste solidification, carbon sequestration, and agricultural fertilizers.[Conclusions]With the nation's development, the industrial extraction and consumption of basalt ore have been increasing annually at an average rate of 7%, with the market size achieving a compound annual growth rate of over 10%. This indicates a promising market outlook. During the development and utilization process, domestic consumption of basalt ore in the construction and building materials sector accounts for as much as 98.5%, while other sectors make up only 1.5%. It is anticipated that the application of basalt ore and its deep-processed products will expand into broader fields in the future.
